Gran and the Spider
Gran and the Spider is a recount by a boy about a trip to the museum with his gran. The narrator knows the only thing that scares his intrepid grandmother is spiders. In heavy traffic, a spider drops into her lap – but she doesn’t see it. Should he tell her? The style is friendly and conversational.
The text is composed of a variety of sentence types. Illustrations support the text but not all events are illustrated. A thought balloon appears in art. Bold face and italic are used for emphasis. Dashes and parentheses are used. The book concludes with a two-page spread that tells how to write a recount.
Some words may require clarification: residing, crested, apprehensively, gasped. Similes: like eight-legged teddy bears with fangs, like a pirate’s parrot, like a crazy eight-legged badge. Metaphor: terror ran up my spine. Alliteration: pirate’s parrot.
