Facing Jesse James is a gritty historical fiction story presented in six chapters.  Josh is a farmer’s boy and his friend Ben’s the saloon keeper’s son.  Ben’s pappy routinely wups drunks, and Josh is ashamed that his father has never even been in a fight.  Everything changes after Jesse James comes to town. The book concludes with a feature on planning and writing historical fiction.

The text is composed of dialogue and a variety of sentence types.  Dramatic illustrations provide a context and create mood.  Inset boxes encourage readers to notice visual features and aspects of plot, character, and setting, to activate reading strategies, and to clarify vocabulary.  Boxes also highlight issues and prompt personal response.
