Cool Grinds is a short story told in the first person.  Josh and his stepfather seem to have no common ground.  The high stress of a skateboarding competition leads Josh to think about life and choices.  And when he makes a kind gesture to his stepfather, he gains a new power over his own life.  The book concludes with a feature on planning and writing a short story.

The text is composed of dialogue and a variety of sentence types.  Contemporary illustrations provide a context and create mood.  Inset boxes encourage readers to notice visual features and aspects of plot, character, and setting, to activate reading strategies, and to clarify vocabulary.  Boxes also highlight issues and prompt personal response.
