Celebrate Canada: Canoes (Gr 3)

Canoes is a description of the iconic Canadian water craft invented long ago by First Nations peoples.  Canoe types, construction, and modern innovations are explained.  Fact boxes titled “Rapid fact” provide additional information.  The style is conversational and informative.

A variety of sentence types are used.  A Contents lists the six sections in the book.  The text is supported directly by headings, a map, and captioned and labelled photographs.  Sidebars and bulleted lists are used to make information accessible.  Words in boldface type appear in a glossary at the end of the book.

Interest words include birchbark, dugout, fibreglass, aluminum, and craft.  The verbs travelled, hunted, hauled, and paddle are used.  The adjectives great, shallow, and waterproof are used.
