Brain Matter

Brain Matter is an informational report that describes how different parts of the brain work, how the sleeping brain works, memories, and how the brain controls temperature.  Sections on animals’ brains and how brains and computers compare extend the topic.  The book concludes with information on planning an informational report.  The style is informative and conversational.

The book has a table of contents and is divided into sections.  Subheadings and lists are used.  Captioned photographs, illustrations, and a diagram support and extend the text.  Boxes throughout the text prompt comprehension strategies, such as questioning and predicting.  Fact boxes add interest.  A variety of sentence types is used.  An index is provided.

Specialized vocabulary, such as cortex and neurons, are defined in context.
